This piece is the Bronze, pendant version of a Medal created by Oride Yencesse in 1914. This medal commemorates the bombing of Riems Cathedral during World War One.
The Smiling Angel was carved by an unknown artisan during the building of Reims Cathedral between 1236 and 1245. This enigmatic figure has been a popular pilgrim destination for hundreds of years, however this French Catherdral was bombed during World War 1, and the Smiling Angel was broken into pieces. The next morning, a Priest collected the pieces of the broken statue and hid them away - the statue was restored after the War, but it was placed in a museum.
On the reverse there's the image of a Saint and two priests driving away a group of horned demons, or devils, dressed in Loincloths. Around the scene are the words: "Saint Remi chassant les demons incendiaires de Reims. Bas Releif du Portal Nord." This relief of Saint Remi chasing the 'Fire Devils' from Reims is located over the North gate, or door.
